Yakima Herald-Republic (WA) May 8, 2004 Section: Obituaries Adeline Constance Thorpe Engen - Adeline joyously left to go to the Feast of our Lord when she died peacefully in her sleep, Wednesday morning, May 5,2004. Beloved wife of Erling, who predeceased her in 1997, and mother of Mary Lou, Janice and Kristin, Adeline began her journey to the Lord's table as the second daughter of Reverend Henry and Mable Thorpe. She was born in Belfield, N.D., on June 1, 1909, shortly after her missionary parents returned from China. Adeline spent her school years in Beach, ND, Patterson, CA, Minneapolis, MN, Portland, OR, and Milwaukee and Scandinavia, WI. One of her fondchildhood memories was riding the stagecoach from the Biggs Junction, OR, ferry landing to Goldendale, WA, to visit her aunt Bertha Trost. She was graduatedfrom St. Olaf College in the 1930's and continued as an interested and active alumna, thoroughly enjoying her 60th Class Reunion in 1990! Adeline taught school for one year in Cameron, WI, and then followed her parents to San Francisco, CA. There, during the Depression she worked at a variety of jobs and it was here that she and Earl met and married in 1934. Thence began a "moving" family life as Earl progressed in his career with Union Oil in San Francisco, Fresno, Seattle, Spokane and Yakima. The family settled in Yakima in 1955 where Adeline resumed her teaching career at Franklin Jr. High Eisenhower High and Yakima Valley College. In the summers she commuted to Central Washington State College earning her Masters Degree in Business Education in 1963. The community of faith at Central Lutheran Church was a cornerstone of her life and a center of her many volunteer activities: singing in the Choir, teaching Sunday School, participating in the Altar Guild, vivacious leader of the Merri-Mixers, positions of leadership with the Central Lutheran Church Women, and as Financial Secretary for the congregation. Equally interested and active in the Yakima community; she was a lifelong member of the American Association of University Women, a full participant in the local chapter of Republican Women, and sang with joy in Bel Canto. Delighting in her six grandsons, Adeline, lovingly known as Nana, could be found at Little League games and at Westwood West playing golf with "her boys"during every vacation visit. In retirement she and Earl traveled extensively, and enjoyed couples golf and bridge with family and friends. Adeline excelled in many types of hand work, learning the art of hardanger at age 80 and won several blue ribbons at the Fair. A private graveside service will be held at Terrace Heights Memorial Park at 10:00 a.m., with a Memorial Service following at Central Lutheran Church, at 11:00.m. Monday morning, May 10, 2004. Memorials may be given to Central Lutheran Church. Keith and Keith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. | ||||||||||||||||||
