Karen Grimsrud was born 25 AUG 1812 on the Grimsrud Farm of Trøgstad Parish in Østfold to MARTE HALVORSDATTER and HALVOR LARSEN. Her christening was 30 AUG 1812 Trøgstad Parish, Østfold, Norway.
Karen Halvorsdatter Grimsrud was married to Johannes Christiansen the 30th of June 1835. They had five children, two boys and three girls: Christian, Halvor, Johanne Mathia, Anna Louise, and Bolette Amelia.
In 1865 on the Norwegian Census, Karen Grimsrud was widowed. She owned her father's farm, Grimsrud Farm of Trøgstad Parish in Østfold. She was taking care of her father Halvor Larsen who was 86 years old, but was blind in his old age. The Grimsrud farm had been in Karen's family since1768 when it was purchased by Karen's great grandfather Halvor Larsen of gården Slitsrud. Her son Christian helped run the farm. His younger brother Halvor was a deckman on a/the "Indsøes" Steamship. In 1865 the family owned 2 horses, 5 cattle, and 4 sheep. In that year they produced 8 measures of oats, 4 measures of potatoes, 1 measure of barley, and a half measure of rye to support their family of six.
In 1869 Karen, her son Christian age 26 and his three sisters Lovise age 30, Johanne age 18, and Bollette age 11 immigrated to America. (Halvor did not travel with them.) They were traveling on the same contract ticket to RED WING, Minnesota. They sailed on the ODER. The ODER was a Wilson Line feeder ship, and sailed to Hull, England. They took a train to Liverpool, and sailed on a transatlantic steamship to America. They landed at the port of Detroit, Michigan May of 1869.
In 1880 Karen was age 67 and was living with her daughter Bolette, Bolette's husband Julius Heier and their toddlers in Felton township, Clay Co. Minnesota.
Meanwhile Karen's daughter Johanne's husband Ole Svenson Thorpe filed on a homestead claim in Norman county, Rockwell township section 2 in 1879 with his brothers. Soon Bolette's husband Julius Heier filed on a claim next to theirs.
In 1885 Karen was living with her daughter Johanne, Johanne's husband Ole S. Thorpe and their children Sven 9, Karen 7, Bridgit 3, Henry 1, Oscar an infant on their homestead in Rockwell township. Her other daughter Bolette and family were homesteading one claim over.
Karen lived until October 10, 1891. She was 79 years old.
