Susan grew up on a farm that her father chopped out in the pine woods well back from the sea in Bass River township.
The family story says "Susan Adams was descended from Major John Fenwick, one of Oliver Cromwell's soldiers and the offier in command of the mounted troops that guarded Charles I at Whitehall, England before he was executed. One of Major Fenwick's daughters married a man named Adams who was the great great grandfather of Susan Adams".
